Unfortunately, some people can be nasty or cruel to people who are LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/ questioning and others).

Prejudice is disliking or making a judgement about a person or group because of things like their race, sexuality, gender, age or religion. Prejudice against people who are lesbian or gay is called homophobia, and prejudice against trans people is called transphobia.

Being bullied for being LGBTQ+ might mean being insulted or called names, or it could be more serious, but it’s always wrong.A stereotype is a belief that all members of a group share the same fixed personality traits or characteristics. These are usually untrue or only part true. For example, ‘Gay men have great fashion sense.’ Or, ‘All black people can dance.’

Discrimination is when someone treats you differently, unfairly or worse because of your age, being disabled, your gender, gender identity, being married or in a civil partnership, being pregnant or having a child, your region or beliefs, your face, skin colour, where you were born or your sexuality.

If you, or someone you know, is being bullied, we have more information about bullying here.
